Francois Cloutier (1927-2016) was an accomplished painter who aquired an impressive body of oil paintings over the course of his life. After traveling to Morocco, Cloutier returned feeling compelled to tell the stories of the women he observed within this culture. Cloutier was empathetic to the struggles of others and this often became the subject matter of his wall paintings. In "The Virgin", Cloutier employs several symbols to tell the story of this young bride in this original art. On her left is a new candle, burning brightly. To her right the candle is extinguished. Between the two, she stands in the moments before leaving the safety and comfort of her childhood. Although the full moom illuminates her path, she stands on the precipice of the unknown. In her purse, she carries her prayers.
Note: This piece is an oil painting on stretched/wrapped canvas. It is 72'' in height x 48'' in width. It is equipped with a wire hanger for convenient hanging on flat surfaces.
