Francois Cloutier (1927-2016) was an accomplished painter who aquired an impressive body of oil paintings over the course of his life. This original art illustrates a basket holding breadfruit which grows on the Hawaiin Ulu tree; the "Tree of Life". The Ulu tree contained almost everything the native people needed to survive. They used it to make drums, canoes, bowsls, furnitute and even medicine. The young girl is wrapped in the Tapa cloth made from the inner bark on this tree. Cloutier spent significant time in Hawaii, learning about native culture and traditions. Filled with great curiosity and deep empathy, many of his wall paintings involve themes based on his understanding of the experience and daily struggles of native peoples.
